Why it settles toward the door
The interior side of a garage floor is usually supported by undisturbed ground. The outer edge, near the door, sits over the trench that was excavated for the foundation and then backfilled. Backfill is placed loose and compacts for years afterwards. Add water and it compacts faster.
The water is not usually rain — Billings averages 14.3 inches a year. It is the downspout at the corner of the garage, the sprinkler zone along the drive, or a service line running in the same trench. Water follows the trench because that is the easiest path through the ground, which is why the settlement so often traces the foundation line rather than appearing in the middle of the floor.
Once the floor tips outward, the door threshold no longer sheds water away. Meltwater off a parked vehicle runs to the low edge and back into the same soil. Frost depth here is 42 inches, and the chinook cycle freezes and thaws that soil repeatedly through the winter instead of locking it up until spring.
Cracked, or settled? Not the same job
A settled slab has moved as a unit or tipped along a joint, and it can be put back. A cracked slab has failed in bending — usually because it lost support underneath and then carried a vehicle load over the gap. Lifting a cracked slab is possible when the pieces are large and still interlock; it is the wrong answer when the concrete has broken up into small sections, because each one lifts independently and you finish with a mosaic.
Lifting is also the wrong answer when the floor is at the correct elevation and has simply lost bearing. In that case the job is void filling — pack the cavity, restore support, leave the elevation alone.
Why foam usually wins indoors
Two numbers decide most garage jobs. Injection holes: 5/8 inch for polyurethane foam versus 1 to 2 inches for mudjacking. Return to service: about 15 minutes versus 24 to 48 hours (HMI; Superior PolyLift). A garage floor is a finished, visible surface you need to park on the same day, so smaller ports and a fast cure matter more here than anywhere else on the property.
Weight matters too. Foam fill weighs 2 to 8 pounds per cubic foot; slurry weighs 100 pounds and up. If the soil under the slab failed partly because it could not carry load, adding that much mass is worth thinking about. Mudjacking still makes sense on very large voids where bulk fill is simply cheaper, and where a slab is due for replacement anyway and just needs to be usable until then.

Published national ranges put garage floor leveling at $900 to $4,500 (A-1 Concrete). Interior and basement floors run $1,400 to $6,000. Locally, ProMatcher reports slab leveling and mudjacking in ZIP 59102 at $5.01 per square foot, and Montana pricing runs $3 to $9 per square foot for mudjacking and $5 to $20 for foam, with a minimum charge of roughly $300 to $550 per visit.

- Often yes, if the pieces are large and the edges match. A slab broken into many small pieces, or one where the crack faces have crumbled, has lost the stiffness to lift as a unit — that is a replacement conversation, and we will say so.

- With polyurethane foam, about 15 minutes — the holes are 5/8 inch and the material cures fast. With mudjacking, plan on 24 to 48 hours and 1 to 2 inch holes. Indoors, with a vehicle to put somewhere, that difference is usually the deciding factor.
- How do you confirm there's a void under the floor?
- Sounding first: a slab bearing on soil knocks dull, a slab over an air gap rings hollow. The pattern of the hollow area, the direction of the settlement and the drill feel when the first port goes in confirm it before any material is pumped.
